Labor of Love

 “The
Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce held a check presentation ceremony
at Press Plaza during First Saturday as a part of the Labor of Love
fundraising campaign to benefit Asbury Park’s affordable housing
organizations. The Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce presented
over $4,000 in checks to Coastal Habitat for Humanity, All Ahead,
Habcore, Interfaith Neighbors, and Affordable Housing Alliance.”
The
Retail Committee of the Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce invited
local retailers to join in a campaign to help raise funds for the
City's affordable housing organizations. Working with Hazel Samuels,
Director of Community Development and the following groups:
Affordable Housing Alliance, All
Ahead, Coastal Habitat For Humanity, HABcore and Interfaith
Neighbors, the month-long effort kicked off Labor Day weekend
on First Saturday, September 1, with the "Labor of Love" and ended
on First Saturday, October 6.
The campaign had several components for stores and restaurants to
invite their clients, customers and workers to participate by
purchasing a symbolic brick with their name on it for a contribution
and to set aside a percentage of their First Saturday sales to the
combined charities.
This event will allow the whole community to join in support of the
affordable housing initiative one brick at a time! During the month
of September shoppers could purchase an Eco-friendly, recyclable
shopping bag for $5.00 which included a symbolic brick at
participating retailers. Proceeds from the bags, which are being
sponsored by New Jersey Natural Gas and JCP&L, will be given to the
combined City charities. The sale of the bags is an opportunity for
stores and shoppers to be GREEN by reducing the use of plastic,
thereby providing an environmentally friendly benefit to the City.
During a short Labor of Love presentation a “Big Check” was
presented to the affordable housing organizations during First
Saturday on October 6th in the amount of $3,863.00,
additional funds were received the following week bringing the total
to $4,065.00, providing $813.00 to each of the five organizations.
Special thanks go to the employees of MDS Pharma Services (Neptune),
Brian Church (Spring Lake) and Hazel Samuels who manned a table each
Friday during September at the Asbury Park City Hall.
The
Labor of Love Eco-friendly bags are still available at the Chamber’s
office, call 732-775-7676.
