Pippin

8/9/2012

Location: Theatre at Saint George 700 Grand Ave. Asbury Park

Description: Music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, book by Roger O. Hirson & Bob Fosse (uncredited). Originally produced on Broadway by Stuart Ostrow and directed by Bob Fosse.

July 26 – August 12 (14 performances)

Pippin was Stephen Schwartz’ Broadway musical. Prior to Pippin, Mr. Schwartz had written the song “Butterflies are Free” for the award-winning comedy, Butterflies are Free. Mr. Schwartz is currently represented on Broadway with Wicked and the revival of Godspell. Pippin opened on Broadway in 1972 and ran for 1,944 performances. It garnered 11 Tony nominations and had five wins including Tony Awards for Ben Vereen, Tony Walton, Jules Fisher and Bob Fosse (2). In addition to Mr. Vereen, the original cast included Broadway veteran John Rubenstein, recently seen on TV in recurring roles in “Desperate Housewives” and “Harry’s Law”, the award-winning actress Jill Clayburgh and Irene Ryan, the iconic Granny Clampett on “The Beverly Hillbillies.”

Loosely based on the eldest son of Holy Roman Emperor Charlemagne, the musical centers around a mysterious acting troupe, led by a Leading Player and tells the story of Pippin, a young prince searching for the meaning and significance of his life. Accompanying him on his journey are his doting grandmother, Berthe, devious but charming stepmother, Fastrada and the woman he loves Catherine. This classic piece of Broadway history from the creator of Wicked and Godspell will have all of the flavors of a high energy ReVision production.

Performances Wednesday through Sunday and tickets available at revisiontheatre.tix.com and get more information about our 2012 Season at www.revisiontheatre.org.

Rated (PG), 100 minutes; Documentary

In short: With epic proportions of Shakespearean tragedy, the film follows two unique characters whose rags-to-riches success stories reveal the innate virtues and flaws of the American Dream. The film begins with the family constructing the biggest house in America, a 90,000 sq. ft. palace. Over the next two years, their empire, fueled by the real estate bubble and cheap money, falters to the economic crisis. Major changes in lifestyle and character ensue within the cross-cultural household of family members and domestic staff.
