The 2014-15 Orchestra Series kicks off in a big way: a big band way. Father Alphonse Stephenson conducts his orchestra in "Swinging by the Sea" to celebrate the Swing Era with hits from the 1930s and 1940s. The Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea's big band lineup still includes a complete string section, and will feature vocalists including home-grown star Chris Pinnella. Sure to be one of the highest demand concerts at the Jersey Shore this fall, no tribute to the music of that era would be complete without paying tribute to the heroes of World War II.

Algonquin Arts Theatre reprises its highly regarded production of The 1940's Radio Hour. A different time is evoked in this marvelously theatrical and winning show, a live broadcast of a The Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade from the Hotel Astor's Algonquin Room (Really - it's in the script) on December 21, 1942. The spirit of that bygone era when the world was at war and pop music meant "Strike Up the Band" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (both are in this show) is accurately captured as the harassed producer copes with a drunk lead singer, the delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mike, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad, and the trumpet player who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller.

Book by Walton Jones
Based on an idea by Walton Jones and Carol Lees
