Gypsy

11/23/2014

Location: Axelrod Performing Arts Center, 100 Grant Avenue, Deal, NJ

Description: From the first trumpet blast of its legendary Overture to the last white hot spotlight, Gypsy is considered by many to be "the best musical ever." Directed by Perry Nominated Andrew DePrisco, Gypsy tells the backstage tale of vaudeville entertainer turned stripper Gypsy Rose Lee and her domineering, overbearing mother, Rose, as Rose battles stage directors, theatre owners, and hotel managers in her efforts to push her two daughters toward stardom during the dying days of vaudeville.

This musical fable was created by three theatrical giants. The book is by two-time Tony Award winner Arthur Laurents, with music by two-time Tony Award winner Jule Styne, and lyrics by multiple Tony Award winner Stephen Sondheim. Original direction and choreography was created by Jerome Robbins. The legendary score hosts such classics as Everything's Coming Up Roses, Together Wherever We Go, Let Me Entertain You, and Some People.

Algonquin Arts Theatre reprises its highly regarded production of The 1940's Radio Hour. A different time is evoked in this marvelously theatrical and winning show, a live broadcast of a The Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade from the Hotel Astor's Algonquin Room (Really - it's in the script) on December 21, 1942. The spirit of that bygone era when the world was at war and pop music meant "Strike Up the Band" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" (both are in this show) is accurately captured as the harassed producer copes with a drunk lead singer, the delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the mike, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad, and the trumpet player who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller.

A Christmas Carol - A Solo Performance

One Man - One Hour- A Full Season of Holiday Spirit(s)

The Play
This one-act, one-hour, solo stage adaptation of A Christmas Carol is enacted by Dickens himself, and is based on a condensed version of the novel that he used while on the second of his historic reading tours of the United States.

The Story
Through an unexpected turn of events, Charles Dickens' American Reading Tour in 1867 is off to a 'rough' start. However, Mr. Dickens -- always the consummate showman -- triumphantly proclaims that he will deliver what he has promised to present! By changes of voice, gesture and expression, he peoples the stage with a throng of characters from his classic Christmas tale and recreates, with improvised wit and charm, the familiar journey of Ebenezer Scrooge -- an embittered, lonely, old miser, who (with the help of three spirits) finds a second chance to become a generous, caring human being. What sets this fresh, new adaptation apart is its ability to rely on the power of the text -- shared simply, directly and intimately through great storytelling.

The Algonquin's New Year's Eve concerts have become the best way to close out the year, and 2014 will be no different as you're invited to rewind to dance, sing and relive your passion for the best music from the 60s and 70s with the world's premier McCartney concert experience. Praised by Beatles promoter Sid Bernstein - the guy who brought the original Beatles to North America - as "the best on the scene today," The McCartney Years is a note-for-note faithful recreation of a mid 1970s Paul McCartney concert. Led by perfectionist Yuri Pool as Sir Paul, the band has a commitment to 100 percent live and accurate reproductions of McCartney's concert experience. The show is period-true, technically stunning and sonically explosive. Every note is live and played true to its original arrangement. It has set the standard for all who might follow in this significant body of work. And... it's a blast to watch and listen to! Whether he's playing a real McCartney-style Hoffner bass or sporting the same wardrobe from the "Wings over America" mid-70s tour, Yuri is true to Sir Paul in his musicianship, vocal stylings and presentation. And the band doesn't miss a beat delivering a texture that will transport you back to the first time you heard these great songs on vinyl.

Premium tickets include two drink vouchers in the purchase price!
